Fictitious Island Creation

Post by rbrown3rd » Fri Mar 11, 2005 10:26 pm

To create a totally imaginary island with mountainous relief is there a way I can register a bitmap image and then convert the gray scales or colors to elevations? ....or could I just use the bitmap as a guide to manually enter elevations?

Hello,

If the maximum elevation is 255 meters then it is very easy. With PSP (other tools should make it also possibel) you start with a grey-scale image. Then you convert it to 24-bit color. Then you "split" the color image into the green, red and blue images. Then you paint the red and blue with zero. Then you "combine" all the 3 and you get a bitmap ready for mesh generation in SB. See this:

Great. Thanks Luis. I am not quite ready to start that project but will be as soon as we get Florida done.
