Terrain Mesh Enhancement

Post by old grey dog » Sun Aug 21, 2011 7:01 pm

I have FS Global 2010 and the "ULtimate" upgrade for Europe and Africa (global terrain mesh data).

Their claimed mesh detail does not extend to some parts of Scotland that I have examined for example Arthur's Seat (Edinburgh's extinct volcano) doesn't have sufficient detail to represent it properly.

How do I set about enhancing the terrain mesh in selected areas to improve terrain realism? (For Arthur's Seat I would use the Ordnance Survey's Explorer map of the area that has contour information at a sufficient level of detail.)

Certainly it can be a captivating challenge to make ones' own FS terrain mesh, but have you seen this forthcoming add-on:

VFR Photographic Scenery Scotland Islands Volume 6 - Scotland South - Not yet released for FSX

IIRC, all these packages will also have available a 5 Meter resolution terrain mesh:

However, for those that prefer to make their own FS terrain mesh, there is likely some LIDAR data out there somewhere of that rather famous landmark ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur%27s_Seat,_Edinburgh ) which could be used to make a high resolution FS terrain mesh (5 to 10 Meters between elevation data points).

FYI: One would best make such a terrain mesh via the FSX Terrain SDK Resample utility (SBuilder's methods result in only a LOD-8 resolution at 152.9 Meters between elevation data points)

Hope this helps ! :-)
