Daytime Shadows at Night

Postby Dave Torkington » Thu Feb 26, 2015 12:58 pm

I've successfully created a 'Day' and 'Night' photoreal with .TIFF blend maps but I have a problem.

On the 'Day' .bmp I made shadows under some static aircraft / gate guards which display fine during the day.

For the 'Night' .bmp I simply removed the shadows, but they still show at Night, Dawn and Dusk... It's as though the 'Day' photoreal is still showing through at night somehow.

I know the Night photoreal is displaying ok because I added some spotlight / streetlight 'splashes' to give the impression of night lighting and these show just fine. It's just that the shadows under the aircraft are still there at night!

Any ideas of a solution?

Regards, Dave.

Hello Dave,

Interesting situation. Could you show some screenshots? Just curious to see this problem.

No idea what is going on, but do you have 2 Day Maps and 2 Night Maps in your scenery?

Best regards.

Hi Luis,

Thanks for your reply. Here's the Day / Night shadows:

I double checked the 'Night' .bmp and I can confirm there's definitely no shadow under the aircraft.

Yes, I have 2 Day Maps and Two Night Maps.

It would be very good to have a solution that removes the shadow at night but it's not a complete 'stopper' to releasing the scenery...

Best regards,

Dave.

Looks beautiful - great work!

No idea why you are getting that shadow at night, unless Resample is, in fact, applying your Light Map to the Day Map when creating the Night variant. If so, then you can either live with it or remove the shadows in the Day Map to avoid the problem at night. But, what a shame that would be since the shadow looks great.

On the other hand, you do have that area illuminated at night and lamps would cast a shadow below the airplane, so this is very realistic.

Best regards.

Thank you Luis, very kind indeed!

I agree with your theory about the Resample somehow applying the 'Day' map. Anyhow, I like the shadow illusion too much to loose it now!

In fact I had lightened the shadow by 50% or so to try and minimize the impression at night. I like your explanation of the spot lights casting a shadow too ;-)

Regards,

Dave.
