Problem with LWM polys appended from polish MP

Post by Vhalan » Sun Jun 26, 2005 11:02 am

Hi

I'm new to designing scenery, and are still learing the basics on how VTP and LWM files are working. I found your program and has used it a lot lately due to the easy user-interface.

Now what I've been trying to do, is importing lakes via the Polish MP append function. I've managed to do this, and the result in FS is really stunning. However in some cases I get oddities with large squares of water when looking at the lake in FS. I found that this is caused by the data being divided from 1 single polygon until many smaller polygons along the LOD13 square lines.

My question is wether or not this is something I have to live with, or is there a setting I've missed? The reason for the -9999 altitude data is that I've found that the water follows the terrain, and not staying at sea-level. Maybe there is another approach to accomplish this which I don't know of.

I've read the documentation and searched the forum here and at AVSIM, but not found anything on this topic.

This screenshot visualizes the problem:

Hello,
Here is the answer:
http://www.ptsim.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=245

See my screenshot at the end:
I moved your poly8.
I can control which points I will loose, when I delete this polygon.
11 Points showing an incorrect island.
I would delete poly8, and correct the other polygon.

The algorithm of LWM in SB works with 99,95 percent.
So, you have to append (or control it with other program) the data again and control it and correct it. (most of the time it is very easy)
Sometimes you are lucky and have no failure.

How to avoid this problem or reduce the failures:

Some vector data are really crazy.
They have to cover a bigger area (to see the assigned colour), then we have to cover with LWM in the Sim (ex: ocean).
They also split the polygons along some gridlines (and not always the same)
And this make troubles in Sbuilder, IMO.

Before you compile the data, try to join the polygons!
(this should run automatic)
Using the setting in SB:
Options/Preferences/Other settings/Auto Line enabled.

You will reduce, depending on the data, the number of SB failures.

And you can make from the joined polygons very easy, with “Make line”, a line, which you can use for a shoreline.

Because, most of the data do not have an extra shoreline.
We need it in the SIM, but we do not need it in maps.

When you using a mesh bitmap as background, you should also use the append data.
You can assign the correct height for lakes and control the data for this failure.
Also when you use tilted LWM for rivers.

Maybe Luis or others have a better idea.

Thanks for your informative reply. I will certainly try the join lines option to see if that will reduce the number of lakes which end up as I've displayed. I've also found that even if sometimes they are easy to fix manually by deleting a polygon, sometimes the problem is more complex, and requires a lot of manually tweaking.

It seems to me like when the polygon is splitted by the grids sometimes they are inverted by the points following the opposite side of the LOD13 grid, than the closest and most obvious. This causes water to overshadow other water polygons.

BTW, any suggestions for tools one can use to control the data before compiling?

Hello,
Quote:
“ BTW, any suggestions for tools one can use to control the data before compiling?”

I think you misunderstood my sentence (sorry):
“So, you have to append (or control it with other program) the data again and control it and correct it.”
I meant the resulting, compiled bgl, you can check for example with TMFViewer!

I think, Sbuilder has anything you need.

First when you append mp, bln or sbx you can visual control your data.
Then compile.
And then you append the result bgl again, and control it.

To your discovery:
Sometimes and sometimes not - this is the problem.
(also sometimes, when the polygon has points in 3 LOD 13)

When we can discover, always the same situation, where SBuilder fails, maybe Luis can change the code. Or give the tool some control function, so this situation can be avoided.
Means:
When you can draw a polygon, which fails, I think there is a good chance.

Quote:
“sometimes the problem is more complex, and requires a lot of manually tweaking”

Yes, there are sometimes bad situations.
You can insert also points to the polygons and move them.
And you can draw a new Polygon using LWM Land. This will cover water.

But how much time it will take?
Most user have to change some source data to fit them, for example, to the mesh.
So you are coming back with the bgl and do some little change.

Try to do the change, when you control and rework!

You can use Sbuilder as a converter, but then you must have excellent vector, raster and mesh data, fitting perfect.
And for free, this is very rare.

When you do not want to use Sbuilder only as a converter, (a “one click” scenery tool) you will find out, that you can control all the data without ever seen the result in FS.
But this means some experience.

I think I understand you correctly now. Thanks for your informative replies.

BTW I checked the Polish data in GPSMapEdit with the "Verify Maps" function and found the following warning appear 10 times on the file I'm working with:

WARNING: Polygon contour intersects self:

Maybe that has something to do with the problems I'm getting with the polygons?

Just a thought. Oh, well, better do some manual tweaking then... [:)]

Hi Vhalan,

If the polygons intersect themselves, then it is almost sure that SBuilder will not be able to cut the polygon correctly along LOD13 lines!

Hm, I had a suspicion that was a problem. Anyways, thanks for your great utility. I find it very useful.

I'm working on a big project. All the data so far are derived from shapefile polys which I appended into sbuilder as bln (would be nice to use shapefile directly, but can't have everything :) ). As indicated in theis and other threads, about 99.5 % of the polys compile correctly. The problem, is coming up with a strategy to find and fix the ones causing the problem.

I'm trying to work on a LOD8 cell at a time. I'm not exactly sure what to look for. It would be nice to be able to extract a subset of polys to a second file, to try to reduce the possibilities. here is an example of where I am. I'm working on it, but it can be slow going.

Hello Scott,
You can do the following:
A)Append all your data
B)Use as a second program TMFViever or better LWMViewer
C)Run both program at the same time
D)Compile the data in SB
E)Open then the bgl with the second tool
F)Check the data visual for a failure in the second tool
G)Select only this area (the polygons) in SB
H)Compile, SB will compile only selected polygons
I)Check again in the second tool
J)When you find the polygon save it as sbx, or bln

Maybe you can find a situation and Luis has a chance.
But, you should reduce it, to only one polygon.

Thanks Horst,

that is pretty much what I am doing now. Sometimes, LWMViewer shows a whole Cell covered with LWM poly, sometimes an area, and sometimes there is a really strange fan-shape in an area. So I have been trying to do a logical subsetting, using the window select method until I find the poly in sb that is causing the problem. Is thre some way to extract just selected polys to an sbx or bln file? It seems like I just get the entire file saved off (13 Megs).

It seems like in many cases, I can convert a poly to line (deleting the old poly), break the line into two pieces, then convert each of the two lines into polys to get the polys to compile correctly.

I have had no luck getting "check poly" to fix things. I went as far as setting distance to 8 meters and still no luck. At that point I was afraid of losing detail in my polys.

Hi Scott,

If you get an example - "shows a whole Cell covered with LWM poly" - please send me. I only get "area errors".

I assume that your polygons are not "pre-divided" (menaing they were not BGL appended). As you know FS requires the polygons to sit in a single Area. When a polygon spans more than one Area we need to cut it across the borders of the LOD13 areas. Please have a look to:

http://www.ptsim.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=245

My tip to manually teak these problems once you discover the original polygon that is not correctly divided is:

- to check for points that are precisely placed on the LOD13 grid and move them a litle bit.

If you want to isolate the polygon for exporting it just select it (click on it and do not use the window tool). Then use the "Invert Selection" and then Delete (all but the polygon in cause will be deleted).

Hello,

There is a difference in LWM and VTP generated bgl polygons in SB!?

13 MB bgl polygons are to big for running smooth in on every system in FS.

Hi,

LWM polys need to be divided along LOD13 areas. Once divided they can be concave. No need to divide them in triangles.

VTP polys need to be divided along LOD8 cells. They can not be concave except in very simple cases. So they are also divided in triangles.

Thanks. That's a good tip. Is there a potential problem when a poly cuts throught the corner of a LOD13, and there are no points in it? I've been inserting 2 points in each LOD13 portion of a poly just in case.

For Horst, the <13 Meg> is the text SBX file, not the compiled BGL.
